Gainway provides multiple ways to remove data depending on what you need to delete — from individual trades to entire accounts to a complete data wipe. This page covers all deletion methods and their implications.
⚠️ Important
Deletions are irreversible. Always consider exporting a backup first via Settings → Data Management → Export Settings.
Delete Individual Trades / Groups
From Trade Log (Trade Mode)+−
From Trade Log (Trade Mode)
- Navigate to Trade Log (Alt+1 for Trade mode).
- Select trades:
- Click a row to select one trade
- Shift+click for range selection
- Ctrl/Cmd+click to toggle individual rows
- Header checkbox to select all visible
- Right-click selected row(s) → Delete Trades (or press Delete key).
- Confirm in the dialog — shows count of trades to delete.
Effect: Deletes the trade rows. If trades belonged to groups, group aggregates recalculate. Groups with no remaining trades are deleted automatically.
From Group Log (Group Mode)+−
From Group Log (Group Mode)
- Switch to Group mode (Alt+2) in Trade Log.
- Select one or more groups (same selection methods as trades).
- Right-click → Delete Groups.
- Confirm deletion.
Effect: Deletes the group(s) and all trades within those groups. This is a bulk delete of the complete round-trip sequences.
From Ideas View (Idea Mode)+−
From Ideas View (Idea Mode)
In Idea mode (Alt+3), you can:
- Dissolve an Idea — Right-click an idea → Dissolve Idea. This removes the idea container but keeps the underlying groups and trades (they become ungrouped).
- Remove from Idea — Right-click a group within an idea → Remove from Idea. The group is removed from the idea but remains in your data.
- Delete trades/groups — Same as Trade/Group mode: select rows and delete.
From Day Dialog+−
From Day Dialog
- Open Day Dialog (click a date on Calendar, or right-click a trade → Show Day).
- In the trades table, select trades to delete.
- Click Delete Selected button in the dialog footer.
- Confirm.
This is convenient for deleting all trades from a specific day.
Delete Entire Accounts
Account Form Dialog+−
Account Form Dialog
- Open Account modal (toolbar → Account button).
- Click Delete Account button (trash icon, red) on the account you want to delete .
- Confirm by typing the account name.
Effect: Permanently deletes the account AND all its trades, groups, notes, and tags. This cannot be undone.
Shared mode: If you're viewing shared data, you can only delete accounts you own (where you're the data owner).
Archive vs. Delete Account+−
Archive vs. Delete Account
| Action | Data Retained | Reversible | Use Case |
|---|---|---|---|
| Archive (toggle Visible off) | All trades, groups, notes retained | Yes — toggle Visible back on | Temporarily hide from views/stats |
| Delete Account | Nothing — all data purged | No | Permanently remove account |
Recommendation: Use Archive (uncheck Visible) unless you're certain you want the data gone forever. Archived accounts' data still exists and can be restored instantly.

Backup Before Deleting+−
Backup Before Deleting
Always export a backup first:
- Settings → Data Management → Export Settings — saves preferences only (column layouts, templates, etc.) as JSON.
- For a full backup including trades: Use the Import Options dialog (when importing a backup file, there's a "Download Backup" button that exports everything: trades, notes, accounts, tags, preferences).
Store the backup file(s) locally. You can re-import them later if needed.
