Display Modes

Understand Gainway's three display modes: Trade, Group, and Idea — and how they change what you analyze.

Overview

Gainway has three display modes that change what a "row" represents in tables, charts, and statistics. The mode you choose changes the unit of analysis — from individual executions to auto-grouped round-trips to manually composed ideas.

Switch modes using the Display Mode dropdown in the toolbar (center of the top navbar).

Trade Mode

Each row = one round-trip execution (default display on many platforms).

  • Statistics calculate per execution (Win Rate, Avg Execution P&L, Profit Factor, etc.)
  • Charts plot each execution as a point (P&L over time, trade count, etc.)
  • Table shows entry/exit time, symbol, quantity, entry/exit price, P&L, fees
  • Use when: Analyzing individual execution quality, entry/exit timing, sizing per execution

Group Mode

Each row = one auto-grouped round-trip. Gainway automatically groups executions that form a single flat-to-flat cycle. This allows adds and partials to be counted as a single trade group.

Automatic Grouping criteria:

  • All executions in a group must be from the same account and same contract
  • Add-ins (scaling in) and partial profit taking (scaling out) are combined into one group
  • Grouping runs from flat to flat — the group opens when position goes from 0 → non-zero, closes when it returns to 0
  • Grouping is automatic — no manual configuration needed. Every execution is assigned a group, even if there is only one execution in the group.
  • Statistics aggregate per group (Group P&L, Executions per Group, Win Rate per Group, Avg Hold Time per Group, etc.)
  • Charts plot one point per group (Group P&L timeline, trade count, etc.)
  • Table shows execution count, net P&L, win rate, avg P&L
  • Use when: Analyzing full round-trip performance including scaling in/out, true hold time, net execution quality

Idea Mode (Default)

Each row = one trade idea — a manually composed collection of groups.

Purpose: Combine multiple groups across different accounts into a single thesis. Common for copy trading (same strategy on multiple accounts) or multi-account structures.

  • Created manually — select groups from Group Mode and assign them to an Idea via the data tables. (highlight then right click)
  • Groups can span multiple accounts — unlike Group Mode (single account + contract), an Idea can contain groups from different accounts
  • Statistics aggregate per idea (Idea P&L, Idea Win Rate, Groups per Idea, Avg Hold Time per Idea)
  • Charts plot one point per idea (Idea P&L timeline, Idea Win/Loss distribution)
  • Table shows idea name, tags, group count, net P&L, win rate, date range
  • Use when: Reviewing thesis-driven performance across accounts, comparing the same setup traded on multiple accounts, journaling multi-account trade narratives

Note: Ideas are composed of groups, not raw executions. An idea can span multiple accounts.

Filters Apply Across All Modes

Global filters (date range, accounts, tags, symbols, sessions) are applied before the display mode groups data.

  • In Trade Mode: filters hide individual executions
  • In Group Mode: a group only appears if its executions pass all filters
  • In Idea Mode: an idea only appears if its computed data passes the filters.

This means statistics always reflect the filtered subset, regardless of mode.

Switching Modes

Use the Display Mode dropdown in the main navbar:

  1. Click the mode selector (shows current mode: Trade / Group / Idea)
  2. Select the desired mode
  3. Tables, charts, and statistics update instantly — no reload needed
