Tags & Tag Types

Learn Gainway's dynamic tagging system — create custom tag types, apply tags to trades/groups/ideas, display tag types as table columns, and group charts by tag type in Analytics.

Tags are the primary way to categorize and analyze your trades in Gainway. Tags can be applied to individual trades, groups (date+symbol+direction aggregates), and trade ideas (multi-group thesis). The tagging system is fully dynamic — you define your own tag types (categories like Setup, Entry, Timeframe, Psychology, etc.), create tags within each type, and optionally display each tag type as its own column in tables or use them for chart grouping in Analytics.

🔑 Key Concept: Dynamic Tag Types

Unlike hardcoded categories, you create your own tag types. Default types are Setup,Mistake, and Other, but you can add Entry, Timeframe,Psychology, Session, Strategy, or anything else.

Accessing the Tag Manager

Open Tag Manager+

Open Tag Manager

  1. Navigate to Tags in the left sidebar (tag icon).
  2. The Tag Manager view shows all tag definitions grouped by tag type.
  3. Click the gear FAB (bottom-right) to open Tag Type Setup.

Shortcut: The Tag Manager is also accessible from the Filter modal → Tags section.

Creating Tag Types

Tag types are categories that hold tags. Each type has a name, color, sort order, a Format, and an Allow Individual Column toggle.

Step-by-Step: Create a Tag Type+

Step-by-Step: Create a Tag Type

  1. Open Tag Manager (Tags page in sidebar).
  2. Click the gear FAB (bottom-right) → Tag Type Setup dialog opens.
  3. Click New Tag Type.
  4. Fill in:
    • Name: e.g., "Entry", "Timeframe", "Psychology", "Strategy"
    • Color: Pick a hex color (used for chips, column headers, chart series)
    • Allow Individual Column: ON = this tag type gets its own column in Trade Log / Group Data Table / Analytics tables. OFF = tags only appear in the combined "Tags" column.
    • Format: Tags (default — holds named tags), Checkbox, or Rating (1-5). See Value Formats below. The format cannot be changed after the type is created.
    • Checkbox States: (Checkbox format only) choose 2-state (checked / unchecked) or 3-state (checked / unchecked / undefined).
    • Sort Order: Auto-assigned; drag rows in Tag Type Setup to reorder.
  5. Click Save. The new type appears in the Tag Type Setup table and in Tag Select dialogs.

Example Custom Tag Types: Entry (Breakout, Pullback, Reversal), Timeframe (1m, 5m, 15m, 1H, 4H, Daily), Psychology (FOMO, Revenge, Patient, Disciplined), Session (Asia, London, NY, Overlap).

Value Formats: Checkbox & Rating Tag Types+

Value Formats: Checkbox & Rating Tag Types

Besides named tags, a tag type can hold one value per row instead of child tags:

  • Tags (default) — each row can carry any number of named tags from the type (e.g., Setup = ORB).
  • Checkbox — each row stores a checked / unchecked flag (e.g., "Followed Plan"). 3-state checkboxes also support an undefined state meaning "not yet decided"; on 2-state checkboxes an unset row simply counts as unchecked.
  • Rating (1-5) — each row stores a star rating from 1 to 5. A blank/cleared cell means unrated and never counts against averages.

Values can be set on trades, groups, and ideas. When analytics aggregates a group or idea, its own value combines with the values of all member trades.

Note: Both the name and the format of a tag type are fixed at creation — they cannot be changed afterwards. Pick the format deliberately when you create the type.

Default Tag Types (Created on First Run)+

Default Tag Types (Created on First Run)

TypeColorAllow ColumnPurpose
Setup #81C784✓Trade setup classification — default tags: Breakout, Reversal, Momentum, Range Trade, Gap Fill
Mistake #EF5350✓Error categorization — default tags: FOMO Entry, Revenge Trade, Overtrading, Poor Risk Management, Ignoring Stop Loss
Other #64B5F6✓Catch-all for miscellaneous tags — default tags: Scalp, Swing, News Event, Market Open, Market Close

All three defaults have Allow Individual Column = ON, so they appear as separate columns in tables by default.

Creating Tags Within a Type

From Tag Manager+

From Tag Manager

  1. In Tag Manager, each tag type shows as a card with a table.
  2. Click Add in the card header (or the + button in Tag Type Setup).
  3. Enter Tag Name, select the Tag Type (defaults to that card's type), add optional Description.
  4. Click Create. Tag appears in the table, sorted by usage count (most used first).

Displaying Tag Types as Individual Table Columns

When a tag type has Allow Individual Column = ON, it gets its own dedicated column in:

  • Trade Log (Trade Data Table)
  • Group Data Table (Daily view, Group mode)
  • Analytics Data Table cards
Enabling Tag Type Columns (Column Settings)+

Enabling Tag Type Columns (Column Settings)

  1. In Trade Log / Group Table / Analytics Data Table, click the Column Settings gear icon (top-right of table).
  2. In the Columns tab, find entries prefixed with tag: (e.g., tag:Setup, tag:Entry, tag:Timeframe).
  3. Drag from the Available list to the Visible column for each tag type you want as a column.
  4. Drag to reorder columns — tag columns can be placed anywhere.
  5. Click Save. Column visibility/order persists per table view.

Tip: The combined Tags column (all tags comma-separated) is separate — you can show/hide it independently.

Example: Setup / Entry / Timeframe Columns+

Example: Setup / Entry / Timeframe Columns

After creating tag types Setup, Entry, Timeframe with Allow Column = ON:

  1. Create tags: Setup → ORB, Trend Pullback, Reversal; Entry → Breakout, Pullback, Limit Order; Timeframe → 1m, 5m, 15m, 1H.
  2. Tag your trades (e.g., Trade A: Setup=ORB, Entry=Breakout, Timeframe=5m).
  3. In Trade Log Column Settings, enable tag:Setup, tag:Entry, tag:Timeframe.
  4. Table now shows three dedicated columns — instantly filter/sort by setup type, entry style, or timeframe.
| Contract | Direction | tag:Setup | tag:Entry | tag:Timeframe | Net P&L |
|----------|-----------|----------------|---------------|---------------|---------|
| NQ | Long | ORB 🟢 | Breakout 🔵 | 5m 🔵 | +$420 |
| ES | Short | Trend Pullback | Pullback | 15m | -$180 |
| NQ | Long | Reversal | Limit Order | 1m | +$95 |
Interactive Checkbox & Rating Columns+

Interactive Checkbox & Rating Columns

Checkbox and rating tag type columns are editable directly in the table — no dialog needed:

  • Checkbox cell: click to cycle its states. 3-state checkboxes cycle undefined → checked → unchecked → undefined; 2-state checkboxes toggle checked ↔ unchecked.
  • Rating cell: click a star to set the rating (1–5). Clicking the current rating again clears it back to unrated.
  • Bulk edit: select multiple rows first, then change a cell — the new value applies to all selected rows.
  • Works in both the Trade Log and Group Data Table columns.

Using Custom Tag Types in Analytics Charts

In Analytics, you can group charts by any tag type that has tags applied to your trades. This works for Cumulative P&L, Scatter 3D, and Data Table cards.

Cumulative P&L Chart — Group By Tag Type+

Cumulative P&L Chart — Group By Tag Type

  1. Open Analytics workspace (or add a Cumulative P&L chart card).
  2. Click the chart's gear icon → Configuration tab.
  3. Find Group By Dimension dropdown.
  4. Select your custom tag type (e.g., Setup, Entry, Timeframe).
  5. Chart now renders one equity curve line per tag value (e.g., ORB, Trend Pullback, Reversal as separate lines).
  6. Each line uses the tag type's color (with auto-variants for each tag value).
  7. Legend shows tag values sorted by final cumulative P&L (best performer top).

Requirement: At least one trade must have a tag of that type for the dimension to appear in the dropdown.

Scatter 3D Chart — Color By Tag Type+

Scatter 3D Chart — Color By Tag Type

  1. Add a Scatter 3D chart card in Analytics.
  2. Configure X/Y/Z axes (e.g., X=Hold Time, Y=Points, Z=Net P&L).
  3. In Color By dropdown, select a tag type (Setup, Entry, Timeframe, etc.).
  4. Each dot colors by its tag value's type color.
  5. Hover shows tag value in tooltip.
Data Table Card — Group By Tag Type+

Data Table Card — Group By Tag Type

  1. Add an Analytics Data Table card.
  2. In card settings, set Group By to a tag type (Setup, Entry, Timeframe, etc.).
  3. Table aggregates stats per tag value (Win Rate, Profit Factor, Expectancy, Avg P&L, Trade Count, etc.).
  4. Enable Tooltip Stats to customize which metrics appear on row hover.
  5. Save as a Chart Template for quick recall.
Bar Chart — Grouping By Tag Type+

Bar Chart — Grouping By Tag Type

When a bar chart's Grouping is set to Tag Type, how it renders depends on the selected type's format:

Standard Tag Types (Tags format)

  • One bar per tag value: every tag in the selected type gets its own bar (sorted alphabetically), e.g., ORB, Trend Pullback, Reversal.
  • Bar height = your metric: pick any stat (Total P&L, Win Rate, Profit Factor, Trade Count, Expectancy, etc.) in the configuration.
  • Show None bar: adds an extra "None" bar for trades without a tag from that type — handy for spotting untagged backlog.

Checkbox & Rating Types (Value formats)

Selecting a checkbox or rating tag type renders a state distribution chart instead of metric bars:

  • Checkbox types: Checked (green), Unchecked (red), plus Undefined (neutral) for 3-state types.
  • Rating types: six buckets — Unrated plus each rating 1 through 5.

Setup (both): add a Bar Chart card → set Grouping to Tag Type → pick the type in the Tag Type dropdown. Checkbox/rating types are listed alongside regular tag types. Hover shows per-bar stats with your configured tooltip stats, clicking a bar drills down into those rows, and vertical/horizontal Bar Orientation works as usual.

Example: Analyzing Setup Performance+

Example: Analyzing Setup Performance

With Setup tag type (ORB, Trend Pullback, Reversal, Breakout):

  • Cumulative P&L grouped by Setup: See equity curves for each setup type — which setup builds equity most consistently?
  • Data Table grouped by Setup: Compare Win Rate, Profit Factor, Expectancy, Avg Hold Time across setups.
  • Scatter 3D colored by Setup: Visualize trade distribution — are ORB trades tighter in hold time? Do Reversals have wider P&L spread?
  • Filter by Setup: In Filter modal → Tags → select "ORB" → all charts/tables instantly show only ORB trades.

Tagging Trades, Groups & Ideas

Tags can be applied to individual trades, groups (date+symbol+direction aggregates), and trade ideas (multi-group thesis). The workflow differs slightly depending on whether you're tagging a single row or multiple rows at once.

Tagging a Single Row+

Tagging a Single Row

In Trade Log, Group Data Table, or Analytics Data Table:

  1. Click the Tags cell (or the combined Tags column) for the row you want to tag.
  2. The Tag Select dialog opens showing available tags grouped by type.
  3. Click any tag to add it; click again (or the chip's ×) to remove.
  4. Click Create New to make a new tag and apply it immediately.
  5. Close the dialog — changes save automatically.
Bulk Tagging+

Bulk Tagging

In Trade Log or Group Data Table:

  1. Select multiple rows (checkboxes).
  2. Click the Tags button in the bulk action bar.
  3. In the Tag Select dialog, current tags show as chips (full = solid, partial = outlined with minus).
  4. Click any available tag to add to all selected rows; click a chip's × to remove from all.
  5. Click Create New to make a new tag and apply it in one step.
How Tag Columns Work When Displayed+

How Tag Columns Work When Displayed

When a tag type has Allow Individual Column = ON and its column is enabled in Column Settings:

  • The dedicated column shows only the tag of that type for each row (e.g., tag:Setup shows “ORB”, “Trend Pullback”, etc.).
  • Click a cell in that column to open the Tag Select dialog filtered to that tag type — only tags of that type are shown.
  • Select a tag to apply it; the cell updates instantly with the tag name and color chip.
  • Click the chip's × to remove the tag of that type from the row.
  • The combined Tags column (if visible) stays in sync — it shows all tags comma-separated.
  • Sort & filter: Click the column header to sort by that tag type; use the column filter menu to filter rows by specific tag values.
Deleting Tags & Tag Types+

Deleting Tags & Tag Types

  • Delete Tag: Removes tag definition + removes tag from ALL trades, groups, and ideas that had it.
  • Delete Tag Type: Only allowed if zero tag definitions use that type. Error snackbar shows count if blocked.
  • Use Tag Type Setup dialog → Delete button (trash icon) with confirmation.

Tag Filtering (Global Filters)

Tags participate in the global filter system — filtering by tag affects ALL views (Calendar, Trade Log, Analytics, Charts).

Basic Mode Tag Filtering+

Basic Mode Tag Filtering

  • Filter modal → Tags section shows tag types as expandable groups.
  • Within a tag type, check multiple tags → OR logic (matches any selected tag of that type).
  • Across tag types → AND logic (must match all types that have selections).
  • Example: Setup = ORB AND Entry = Breakout AND Timeframe = 5m.
  • Save as Filter Template for one-click recall.
Advanced Mode Tag Filtering+

Advanced Mode Tag Filtering

  • Toggle Advanced switch in Filter modal.
  • Add rows with Filter Type = Tag Type.
  • Condition: Equals (has tag) or Does Not Equal (excludes tag).
  • Value = tag type name (e.g., "Setup"); Value 2 = specific tag name (e.g., "ORB").
  • Combine with brackets and AND/OR for complex logic: (Setup = ORB OR Setup = Breakout) AND (Entry != Limit Order).

Best Practices

Designing Your Tag Taxonomy+

Designing Your Tag Taxonomy

  • Start broad, refine later: Begin with Setup/Mistake/Other. Add Entry, Timeframe, Psychology as patterns emerge.
  • Mutually exclusive within type: A trade should have ONE Setup tag (ORB or Trend Pullback), not both. Use Filter's OR logic for "ORB or Breakout".
  • Complementary across types: Setup describes what, Entry describes how, Timeframe describes when, Mistake describes what went wrong.
  • Limit tag count per type: 5–15 tags per type keeps filtering manageable. Too many = analysis paralysis.
  • Use descriptions: Add descriptions to tags (e.g., "ORB — Opening Range Breakout within first 5–30 min") for team clarity.
Column Strategy+

Column Strategy

  • Enable Allow Individual Column for high-value analytical dimensions (Setup, Entry, Timeframe, Session).
  • Keep it OFF for noise types (Psychology, random notes) — they'll stay in the combined Tags column.
  • Save Column Presets per workflow: "Setup Analysis" (tag:Setup, tag:Entry visible), "Timeframe Review" (tag:Timeframe, tag:Session visible).
Analytics Workflow+

Analytics Workflow

  1. Tag consistently for 2–4 weeks.
  2. Open Analytics → Cumulative P&L → Group By: Setup.
  3. Identify top/bottom performing setups.
  4. Drill down: Filter → Tags → select losing setup → analyze Mistake tags, Entry tags, Timeframe tags.
  5. Create Chart Templates for each analysis view.
